Redding police ran a DUI checkpoint on the night of Monday, Sept. 21, 2026, somewhere within city limits. The department announced it that afternoon but didn't say where or what time, according to [KRCR](https://krcrtv.com/news/local/rpd-plans-dui-checkpoint-monday-as-part-of-road-safety-effort). It was the second weeknight checkpoint in Redding this month; the first was on Thursday, Sept. 10. If you were stopped and arrested that night, the date on your paperwork matters more than anything else right now. You have 10 days to protect your license with the DMV, and for a Sept. 21 arrest that window closes on Thursday, Oct. 1. ## Key dates for the Sept. 21 Redding checkpoint - Mon., Sept. 21, 2026: checkpoint held in Redding. - Thu., Oct. 1, 2026: last day to request a DMV hearing if you were arrested on Sept. 21. If your arrest happened after midnight, your paperwork will probably say Sept. 22, which moves the deadline to Fri., Oct. 2. The department also reminded drivers that prescription drugs, over-the-counter medication and marijuana can all impair driving, so a checkpoint isn't only looking for alcohol. We'll update this post if it does. ## Why police announce checkpoints ahead of time It can seem strange that police announce a checkpoint at all. California's Supreme Court upheld DUI checkpoints in Ingersoll v. Palmer (1987), but only if they follow certain guidelines. One of those is advance publicity. Others include a neutral formula for choosing which cars to stop (every car, or every third car, for example), a location picked by supervisors rather than officers in the field, and stops kept as short as possible. When a checkpoint doesn't follow those rules, evidence from the stop can sometimes be challenged. That's one of the first things a defense attorney will look at. ## Your rights at a DUI checkpoint You have to stop and show your license and registration if asked. You don't have to answer questions about where you've been or whether you've been drinking. Politely declining is fine. Before an arrest, the handheld breath test officers offer at the roadside (the preliminary alcohol screening, or PAS) is voluntary if you're 21 or older and not on DUI probation. Field sobriety tests are voluntary too. After an arrest, it's different. California's implied consent law requires a breath or blood test, and refusing it carries its own penalties. Turning around before you reach a checkpoint isn't illegal. But if you make an illegal U-turn or break another traffic law to avoid it, officers can pull you over for that. If you're stopped at a checkpoint and don't have a valid license, Vehicle Code 2814.2 generally requires officers to let a licensed driver take your car instead of impounding it. The DMV process is separate from the criminal case, and it's the one with the short clock.
